Are we going to need bigger boats?

A 14-foot, 2,300-pound great white shark is currently heading eastbound toward Sarasota.

Mote Marine Laboratory scientists tagged the young female shark in August 2013 off Cape Cod, Mass. The shark was named Katharine in honor of Katharine Lee Bates, a Cape Cod native and songwriter best known for her poem and song “America the Beautiful.”

Since August, Katharine has traveled into the Gulf of Mexico toward Texas before changing her path and swimming east toward Sarasota.

Track Katharine’s movements in real time at Ocearch.com.
