Mote scientists study red tide bloom

Mote Marine Laboratory scientists are studying a recent red tide bloom reported offshore of Hernando County.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported the bloom last week in the area of a large fish kill. Satellite images suggest the bloom is 80 miles long, 50 miles wide and 40 to 90 miles offshore between Dixie and Pasco counties.

Scientists sampled water yesterday offshore of Sarasota, Clearwater and northwest approaching the last known edge of the bloom. According to a Mote news release, satellite images allow scientists to see algae blooms at the surface, but water samples are required to confirm the species of algae and document unique conditions surrounding each bloom.
