The Sarasota City Commission directed staff to move forward with an ordinance outside of a proposed mooring field in Sarasota Bay that won’t allow boats to drop anchor any closer than 150 feet to the mooring field.

The ordinance also states boats can’t sit still in the water for more than 90 days and can’t drop anchor to the mainland any closer than 150 feet for more than 12 hours at time.

The commission also agreed to move forward with its current development process for the future State Street parking garage at its regular meeting today at City Hall Monday.

Also at its regular meeting, the commission:

Heard:
• A Public Art Committee update.
• A presentation on public landscape installation and maintenance guidelines for public lands and rights-of-ways.
• An update from the Aging with Dignity and Independence Initiative.

Approved:
• An ordinance that would allow property at 1400 DeSoto Road to be rezoned from commercial to multiple family residential.
• An ordinance that would allow property at the intersection of Siesta Drive and South Tamiami Trail to be rezoned from single family residential to an office community district.

Discussed:
• A potential plan to reduce the speed limit on Tamiami Trail north of 17th Street.
• A concept by Commissioner Shannon Snyder to move the downtown post office because it’s “in the way of development.”
