David Miller gave the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key a history lesson Thursday, May 16, when he shared his memories of early island life.

Miller’s family purchased Cannons Marina and moved in August 1955 to the Key from Detroit, three months before the town incorporated. He got an early start in the family business, counting bait at the marina at age 5.

Miller told Kiwanians the creation of the Longboat Pass Bridge was “the biggest thing to happen to the Key to date.” Before its construction in 1959, the north end was “the end of the world.” Its construction meant he could attend school at Anna Maria Island Elementary.
