Manatee releases FCAT scores

Data released by the Florida Department of Education shows the percentage of students in Manatee County Public Schools considered proficient in reading, math, writing and science has increased in 13 of 20 grade-level categories according to results of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

FCAT scores are grouped into five achievement levels, with students coring at level three or higher being considered as proficient.

The Manatee County School District, in a release today, said in writing and science, the percentage of Manatee students scoring at level three or higher rose in every grade level compared to last year’s results.

Specifically, in writing, the percentage of fourth-grade students coring at or above grade level increased by 13 percentage points from 79% in 2009 to 92% in 2010. In eighth grade, Manatee students improved their writing scores by nine percentage points and in 10th grade by 22 percentage points.

Improvements in science were less drastic, with the percentage of students scoring at grade level or above in fifth and 11th grades rising two percentage points and in eighth grade by one percentage point.

In math, district students scoring at or above grade level increase in sixth through eighth grades and in 10th grade.

In reading, seventh-, ninth- and 10th-grade students saw slight improvements.
