The Manatee Board of County Commissioners will discuss the Longboat Pass Inlet Study at 1:30 p.m. during today’s meeting in the Manatee County Government Administrative Center.

County staff will ask commissioners to endorse the conceptual plan prepared by Coastal Planning and Engineering Inc., which found that a terminal groin on Beer Can Island and two permeable adjustable groins on the north end of the island are key to stopping the southward movement of Longboat Pass and stopping north-end erosion, and seek direction about how to proceed with the final design and permitting of Inlet study recommendations.

The Longboat Key Town Commission heard the results of the study in a November workshop and reached consensus to direct town staff to proceed with the permitting process for the structures, which takes at least a year, but didn’t commit to building the structures.
