“BP Gulf Disaster Vigil — Day 50” drew a crowd of more than 200 June 8, at Ken Thompson Park. It was one of 200 such vigils held simultaneously around the country in response to the oil-spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. The organizers invited attendees to sign a petition urging the Florida Legislature to immediately ban offshore drilling.

The program began with a moment of silence. Speakers included Sarasota Mayor Kelly Kirchner, who spoke about the city’s commitment to renewable energy while holding his 1-year-old daughter, Selby; Maria Bain; Kelly Green; and Dennis Stover. Their theme was the need to fundamentally change the way the country uses energy.

“ … to make the crisis a turning point for America’s oil addiction,” said Sarasota vigil organizer Grace Carlson.

The Rev. Zan Benham “Butterfly Deerwoman” gave a blessing to conclude the program.

Carlson organizaed the vigil with support from MoveOn.org and the Sarasota County Democratic Party.
