Lady Mustangs win regional championship

The Lakewood Ranch High softball team earned its first trip to the state semifinals with a  10-0 victory over River Ridge in the Class 6A-Region 3 finals May 1.

The Lakewood Ranch High softball team shut out River Ridge 10-0 to win the Class 6A-Region 3 championship May 1.

Lakewood scored runs in all but one inning of the game, which shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Lady Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Amber Wimmer reached on an infield hit to lead things off for Lakewood. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Wimmer scored on a double by Taylor Newton.

Lakewood extended its lead, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits, three walks and a wild pitch.

The Lady Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the third inning before Wimmer scored her third and final run of the game to send Lakewood to the state semifinals.

Huntyre Elling pitched a complete game for Lakewood, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Taylor Newton went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, three RBIs and a run scored and Amber Wimmer went 2-for-2 with a walk, a RBI and three runs scored to lead the way for Lakewood at the plate. McKaleigh Goodale went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.

With the win, the Lady Mustangs will play Pembroke Pines Charter in the state semifinals at 2 p.m. May 9 in Clermont.
