Lady Mustangs head to regional finals

The Lakewood Ranch High girls soccer team advanced one step closer to its goal of reaching the state semifinals with a 2-1 victory over George Steinbrenner in the Class 4A-Region 3 semifinals Feb. 2.

Midfielder Kaitlyn Wolfe gave the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute off an assist by Taylor “Jo” Salmon. Lakewood further extended its lead in the 30th minute when Salmon fired the ball into the box to Sarah Miller who headed the ball in for the score.

The Lady Warriors responded in the 32nd minute when Marley Opila found the back of a wide-open net. The Lady Mustangs held the Lady Warriors to just three shots in the second half.

Lakewood returns to action at 7 p.m., Feb. 5 when the Lady Mustangs host Barron Collier in the Class 4A-Region 3 finals.
