Kiwanis Club still hungry for more food donations

The Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key began its Spring Food Drive in March, and now it's hungry for more. The group has extended the effort through April 30, due to requests from the approximately 15 participating condominiums and businesses.

According to food-drive organizer Steve McGee, condominium officials were expecting high occupancy levels throughout the month of April, in part because of the Sarasota Film Festival.

“They’re anticipating a lot of collections as a result,” McGee said. “We’re still optimistic that we’re going to exceed last year’s total.”

The Kiwanis Club did its first pickup last week, which generated approximately 1,000 pounds of food. Last year’s food drive amassed more than 1,300 pounds of food. A second pickup will take place later this week, and a final collection will take place Saturday, May 1.

Participating condominiums have placed 24-by-18.5-inch collection boxes in clubhouses and/or mail rooms to collect unused, nonperishable food items, along with pet and cleaning supplies from seasonal residents before they leave town. Food and supplies are donated to the All Faiths Food Bank, in Sarasota. Representatives from each community have been given contact information for a Kiwanis member who will be responsible for the collection of their donations.
