Kiwanis Club selects Hogle for Citizen of the Year

The Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key will honor the late Police Chief Albert “Al” Hogle as its 2012 Citizen of the Year.

Hogle, 63, died May 14, 2012, in a motorcycle accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.

Hogle served as Longboat Key’s police chief beginning in late 2002 until his death last year.

He grew up in Sarasota and served in the U.S. Air Force before joining hired the Sarasota Police Department in 1970. He worked undercover in the 1970s and 1980s in the department’s narcotics division and earned the rank of captain before his 1998 retirement.

Hogle served as a Sarasota city commissioner from 1998 to 2001, including five months as the city’s mayor in 2001, before he was hired to serve as Bradenton police chief. He remained in that position for just over a year before taking on the Longboat Key police chief position.

The club will honor Hogle at the Longboat Key Kiwanis Foundation’s Third Annual Valentine’s Ball Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Longboat Key Club and Resort’s Harbourside Dining Room.

Tickets to the event will be $95 per person or 10 at $1,000. Proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Club Foundation’s local scholarship fund. Tickets are partially tax deductable.
