They say love comes along when you least expect it, and for Laura Cappiello, that couldn’t be more fitting.

It was a girls’ night out at Cafe Epicure in August 2015, and Laura’s friends were encouraging her to chat up a cute guy at the bar. The encouragement turned to light teasing, but she wasn’t feeling it, and soon she was shedding tears and telling them that she wasn’t looking for a relationship.

The girls got the message and decided to crash the poker night that a friend’s fiancé was hosting. Fast forward to the end of the night, and Laura was helping get everyone to leave the party. She went up to a group of guys whom she didn’t know and told them they needed to head home. One of those strangers was Martin Haas, and she was struck by his good looks.

It turns out that Martin and Laura’s brother, Mark, are friends, so Martin told him he was interested in dating her.  After a little persuading, Mark connected them.

The Proposal

It was May 20, 2016, and the two were on their first couple’s trip in Napa Valley. Laura wondered if Martin would propose in California, but she convinced herself that it would be too hard to hide the ring, so she tried to shake the thought and focus on having fun.

One day, however, he was acting strange. Whenever Laura put her arm around him he moved it, and before their tour at Robert Mondavi Winery, he was nervously fiddling with a poker chip that’s used as a marketing material for his company. When he dropped it and bent down to pick it up, he got down on one knee and proposed.

Laura was so surprised that she hadn’t even said yes yet when a tour group came by asking if they were witnessing a proposal. She said yes and they went on their tour, but Laura was so distracted that she couldn’t pay attention. She apologized to the tour guide and said she didn’t know what was going on in that moment, but she was engaged.

The Wedding

After attending the 2016 Wine Walk to Cà d’Zan, the two knew they wanted to marry there.

They were enthralled with the beauty of the location, and they loved how it’s essentially three locations in one. They were married in the front of the mansion, had cocktail hour on the terrace and held the reception on the Bolger Campiello.

There were 140 guests at the rustic-themed affair, which featured a special first dance.

“We did a tribute to both of our fathers whom we have lost to pancreatic cancer and lung cancer,” she says. “It was such a touching moment for us and our guests to remember them. We chose Cole Swindell's “You Should Be Here” and it truly felt like they were there with us in that moment.”

Martin loved the dance as well, but he notes another memory when asked what his favorite moment was.

“Watching the barn doors open and seeing my absolutely stunning, beautiful bride walk down the aisle towards me,” he says.
