A 19-year old woman was killed and six other people were hurt in a Monday evening crash on Interstate 75 that began when a driver slammed into a vehicle that was stopped because of the closure of the overpass at University Parkway.

A Florida Highway Patrol report says the accident happened at 6:20 p.m. Monday night, in the southbound lanes of I-75 at the State Road 70 overpass.

The woman who died, Mikayla Brandt from Naples, was a passenger in a 2001 Saturn SL with two other people.

The Saturn approached backed-up traffic.

To avoid hitting the car stopped in the left lane in front of him, the driver tried to swerve left to the median.

Instead, the Saturn hit the back of another car.

The Saturn rotated clockwise and overturned into the center median.

The second car overturned to its left side.

As it overturned, the second vehicle hit a third vehicle. The driver of the Saturn and a second passenger suffered serious injuries.

FHP said the driver of the Saturn, a 19-year-old man from Naples, was charged with careless driving.

The four people in the other two vehicles suffered minor injuries.
