Carlos E. Haile Middle School students are pulling out their tacky tourist outfits and other props this week.
The school is celebrating Red Ribbon Week, which dates back to 1988 and was designed by the National Family Partnership organization to educate students and encourage drug prevention activities, the nonprofit's website said. Participants typically wear red ribbons to "show their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America," the website said.
Haile Middle is putting its own spin on the cause with different themes and activities throughout the week.
Tuesday, students wore tacky tourist outfits; today is crazy hat day; Thursday is socks and slide (sandals) day and Friday is superhero costume day.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving also hosted an interactive exhibit during gym classes to demonstrate the harms of drinking and driving.
Proceeds from the daily spirit theme celebrations will benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s underage drinking prevention programs and victim services.
