Groin permit expected in April

Town Manager Dave Bullock informed the Longboat Key Town Commission in an email Thursday the town will receive a federal permit for its north end groin project on or before April 11.

“We will look forward with much anticipation to receiving the permit by that date,” Bullock wrote.

Once the permit is issued, the town can put out a bid for a construction company to perform the work. The town can also begin preconstruction work that includes environmental monitoring of beaches before, during and after construction of the groins. The town is also working to create a revised Erosion Control Line for the north end of the Key.

The town is expected to construct two groins on the north end of the Key to hold sand in that area in summer 2015. Sand, though, could be placed in the area as soon as this summer if a West Coast Inland Navigation District dredging project near Longboat Pass is performed this summer as anticipated.
