GreyHawk Landing’s Community Development District will take a closer look at conserving energy after a resident brought up the subject at last night’s meeting.

Resident Bob Bianchi spoke up during the public comment portion of the board meeting. The 10-year resident attends the community’s pool and recreation center on an almost daily basis, and noticed a waste of money accruing. The rec center’s outdoor pool area has a Play and Spray for children running constantly and most of the time it’s not being used, he said to the board.

“That’s a five horse power engine running for eight hours a day,” Bianchi said.

In addition to wasting energy by powering it all day, the mist from the Play and Spray drifts into the pool, which is heated.

“It’s cooling the pool water, which they’re trying to warm up with a heat pump,” he said.

He asked the board to research shutting off the play equipment for parts of the day when no one is using it.

“Why run it if it’s not being used?” said vice-chairman Michael Plaia. “It’s not going to be a big savings, but I have no problem with doing that.”

Chairman Jeffrey Evans directed field manager Ed Maro to investigate the possibility of keeping the system off during slower hours.

Meeting notes

Maro reported he had installed a locked chain across the entrance to a common area between Snapdragon Loop and Fernwalk Drive to prohibit vehicles from entering the wooded area. He and staff had noticed people were driving back into the secluded area to go fishing at Pond 29 and people were littering and abandoning items like tires in the trees.

“We just want to keep it from getting torn up,” he said.
