A monthlong campaign to aid The Food Bank of Manatee has helped the organization help feed local families.

The "Grand Challenge," which ran through the month of September, called on local clubs, organizations and businesses to pitch in and restock The Food Bank's shelves, which were at a critical low in August.

The community donated 43,025 pounds of food and $38,720 in donations to support the organization, which provides food to other agencies for distribution.

"The community's response has been heart warming," said Food Bank Director Cindy Sloan. "I hope people realize exactly how much this helps feed hungry families throughout our community. We truly appreciate all the help."

The challenge officially ends Sunday, but Sloan asked businesses and groups to continue their fundraising efforts. October, she said, typically is a slow month for donations.
