Rachel Mallett, fourteen, was announced as Girls Inc.’s Girl of the Year Tuesday, Dec. 10. Rachel recieved the award because she embodies everything a Girls Inc. girl is, said Kay Mathers. "Strong, smart and bold."

The announcement came as a surprise to Rachel, who found out after she walked into the multipurpose room and saw member of Girls Inc. wearing masks of her face. Rachel’s father Bill was on stage with past Girls of the Year, and Rachel’s mentor, Jean Enrich, holding up a congratulation sign. “This is surreal,” Rachel said as she thanked everyone. “I feel like I’m in a dream.”

Rachel has attended Girls Inc. since she was five years old and this year will be her final year at Girls Inc. However, Rachel plans on returning as a volunteer next year, when she is a freshman in high school.

The Girl of the Year award is in its fifth year and is an extremely coveted title at the local non-profit. The Girl of the Year represents Girls Inc. and acts a role model to other Girls Inc. girls. Rachel will be given the award in front of 800 people at the 26th annual Celebration Luncheon held at the Ritz Carlton Thursday, April 3, 2014.
