For its  banking center at the intersection of University Parkway and Lockwood Riddge Road, Gateway Bank recently received its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification.

More than 30 people attended a ceremony earlier this month to celebrate the facility, which is the first banking center in Sarasota County to be LEED certified.

"With 5,820 branch banking centers in the state of Florida, Gateway Bank is proud to be one of six that are LEED certified," said Shaun Merriman, president and CEO of Gateway Bank of Southwest Florida.

The Gateway location, formerly home to a Regions Bank, was constructed in 1996. The building was renovated using materials that have a minimal impact on the environment, such as reused masonry block, low-e glass exterior windows and low chemical interior paints, among other items.
