The Longboat Key Garden Club will plant a gumbo limbo tree later this week to celebrate Arbor Day.

According to Virginia Sanders, chair of the event, the group selected the tree in part for its resilience.

“It’s one of the hardiest native trees, it’s salt and drought tolerant, and it grows quickly into a beautiful shade tree,” she said.

The event will take place at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14, at Overlook Park, behind the Chart House Restaurant at the southern part of Longboat Key. Light refreshments will follow. Contact Sanders at 383-3659.
