Sarasota city commissioners may have approved an ordinance requiring leashes on dogs in Payne Park earlier this month, but that doesn't mean our town isn't fido-friendly. There are lots of places in Sarasota that are more than welcoming to mutts.

Break free from the old routine, and take your dog (or dogs) for more than just a walk at these five fun places to play with fido.

+ Brohard Paw Park Beach

Brohard is the only beach in Sarasota County where dogs are free to roam the sand and surf. A park next to the beach provides doggie drinking fountains and showers for puppies to feel refreshed after a day at the beach. This beach and dog park is located in south Sarasota County.

+ Bird Key Park

Dogs aren't permitted to roam free at this park located at 200 John Ringling Causeway, but they can get an experience similar to Brohard a little closer to home. Walk your dog around three acres of natural land while taking in a view of Sarasota Bay — you're dog will be blown away with the view from your vehicle while passing over the Ringling Bridge.

+ 17th Street Paw Park

For those not fond of the bay or seaside selections listed above, visit a classic dog park at this location in northeast Sarasota County. Sporty pets can watch softball teams practice while streaking across the first county paw park, which was built in 1999. The county plans to improve lighting around the entire complex.

+ O'Leary's Tiki Bar and Grill

After a long day at the paw park or beach, relax and have a beer at this restaurant, which features pet-friendly service on the bayfront.

+ Sarasota Farmers Market

Take your dog for a weekend strut down Main Street at this market , where there is no shortage of fellow fido-lovers. Make sure to dress your dog to the nines, however, because there are always some interesting puppy costumes to take in.
