At 27 years old, Brandi Witman won an award some teachers wait a career to earn.

She has only been teaching for four years.

The kindergarten teacher at B.D. Gullett Elementary received the Educator of the Year award at the annual Excellence in Education Awards ceremony, held March 11, at Manatee Technical College's State Road 70 campus.

Witman received a $5,000 check from the Suncoast Federal Credit Union and will advance onto the Florida Department of Education Macy's Teacher of the Year competition to be held later this year.

Marilyn Coughlin, executive assistant to Deputy Superintendent of Operations Don Hall, received the Support Employee of the Year Award last night, and will advance onto the Florida School-Related Employee of the Year competition also slated for later this year.
