John Miles Getker has a message for his friends “back home.”

Getker, an active member of Cub Scout Pack 191 and Boy Scout Troop 303 until his family moved to North Carolina, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Getker coordinated the building of five sturdy wooden beds for the cabins at William Umstead State Park.

Getker achieved most of his rank advancements and merit badges through Troop 303, with which he also went on three international trips.

“Troop 303 was all about the bond of shared suffering,” Getker said. “Trust me, there’s nothing like a 50-mile trek through the mountains to build close friendships.”
