Karli Wilbanks told detectives her boyfriend Michael Goodman was “trying to kill her,” before shooting him with a Colt .45 in their Ranchero Drive home. This week, Sarasota County deputies charged the 25-year-old with second-degree murder in connection with his death.

Officers found Goodman, 41, in the East County residence after responding to a 911 call from Wilbanks before 1 p.m. Aug. 4. After being treated for “heart issues” at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Wilbanks told detectives during an interview that Goodman had charged her, and she shot him after firing two warning shots.

But, a forensic analysis showed inconsistencies in Wilbanks’ account of the incident, and interviews with friends and neighbors failed to support her claim that Goodman was abusive. She is now being held without bond in Sarasota County Jail.
