Cops Corner: Longboat Key

Sept. 4
CURBSIDE SERVICE
9:42 p.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway. Suspicious Person. A supermarket manager reported that a fired employee hadn’t left the area at closing time. The former employee was intoxicated and sitting on a nearby curb. Police provided security for remaining employees and gave the man a ride to Sarasota because he had been drinking.

Sept. 5
A RUDE AWAKENING
10:18 p.m. — 200 block of Sands Point Road. Fire Alarm. A woman was asleep at a resort when the unit’s sprinkler system began to spray her in bed. When she got up to evacuate, she slipped and injured her knee. Firefighter/paramedics on the scene looked at her knee and advised her to go to the emergency room; she refused. The officer observed nearly an inch of water on the floor in her room. Responders didn’t find fire and cleared the scene. The woman was given a new unit to stay in for the night.

PARTY OF FIVE
10:33 p.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road. Trespassing. While checking a beach access point, police observed two vehicles parked at the condominiums that weren’t there earlier that night. The officer walked to Beer Can Island and found five teenagers fishing on the beach. The officer notified the teens that the town’s public beaches close at 11 p.m.

Sept. 6
CANDID CAMERA
9:50 a.m. — 300 block of North Shore Road. Trespassing. A woman’s surveillance cameras caught two males walking around a utility trailer on the property. The men fled when the security light was activated. The officer searched the area and found nothing out of order.

Sept. 8
DON’T TEXT ME, BRO!
4:15 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. A man playing an online game near an island grocery store received a text message that read, “Trespassed lol” and “Better skedaddle bro, cops have been called.” He went to the police station, where he told an officer the identity of the suspected sender.

THE BOSS’S BURDEN
11:48 p.m. — Intersection of GMD and Harbourside Drive. Traffic Violation. A south-end license-plate camera revealed a driver driving on a suspended license for refusing to take a Breathalyzer test. The officer stopped the driver, who was going to work on the Key, and wrote him a ticket. He then called his boss to pick up the vehicle and take him to work.

Sept. 8
STRIKE OUT
11:49 a.m. — 700 block of Hideaway Bay. Property Damage. A man called police after he saw a garbage truck strike a tree. When police responded and located the driver, the worker said he knew struck the tree but didn’t think there was enough to damage to warrant reporting it. The officer examined the tree and found it was pushed over slightly. Police called the driver’s supervisor to look at the tree.
