June 18
All-male review
1:17 a.m. — 4500 block of GMD.
Suspicious Person. A woman reported a man was walking through her condominium parking lot at a late hour. When she walked down to check on her car, she saw two other men walking through the lot. Police couldn’t locate the suspicious males.

Fishing for an answer
2:23 a.m. — Intersection of Broadway and Longboat Drive North.
Suspicious Vehicle. Police noticed an unattended car parked alongside the road. Its occupants approached with fishing gear and told police they were night fishing. They were warned not to park their truck in the intersection.

Shake, rattle and roll
10:18 a.m. — 200 block of Palmetto Avenue.
Suspicious Circumstance. A woman told police someone knocked on her door and then rattled the doorknob. She looked outside and found no one in the area but wanted to document the incident.

June 19
Ride this one out
3:16 p.m. — Broadway Beach Access.
Larceny. A man told police he parked his bicycle in a beach access bicycle rack. When he returned from the beach, he discovered the bike had been stolen. Police gave him a ride home and tried to locate the bicycle but could not find it.

June 21
Boat takeover
1:44 p.m. — Off the Key.
Warrants. Police pulled over a man for speeding in Longboat Pass, arrested him and transported him back to the mainland, because there was a warrant for his arrest in Manatee County for failing to appear in court. The man’s boat was released to his girlfriend.

June 23
Slow motion
10:51 p.m. — 500 block of Cedar Street.
Traffic Violation. Police pulled over a man for driving approximately 15 mph under the speed limit after finding through an earlier registration check that he did not have a valid license or ID card. The driver presented police with a Mexican license and said he has been in Florida for five years and doesn’t have a Florida license. The driver received a citation and court date.

Sound reasonable?
11:09 p.m. — 6700 block Gulf of Mexico Drive.
Code Enforcement. A 17-year-old driver of a truck, who was pulled over because police could hear his music from approximately 350 feet away, told police that it is no longer illegal to drive on Longboat Key with loud music. That didn’t sound right to police, who told him of a town ordinance prohibiting unreasonable sound. The driver received a written warning.

Cat gets his by a car
8:41 p.m. — Gulf of Mexico Drive and Sloop Lane.
Public Service. Two residents witnessed a cat get hit by a car. The cat died of its injuries. Police removed the animal from the roadway and notified Public Works.

June 25
Sign of the times
12:41 a.m. — Overlook Park.
Code Enforcement. Police pointed out a sign displaying park hours after two people were found chatting in the park after hours.

Found money
3:57 p.m. — 100 Broadway.
Found Property. Police found a money clip with $153 cash and no identification at the Broadway beach access.

Pup possession
3:11 p.m. — 4900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.
Code Enforcement. Police verbally warned a man and woman who had a small dog on the beach.

June 26
Demolition don’t
8:43 a.m. — 500 block of Outrigger Lane.
Code Enforcement. A resident called police because he wanted to know whether his neighbor pulled the proper permit for the demolition of his property. Police were unable to track any recent permits and forwarded the matter to Code Enforcement.

Car damage
8:54 a.m. — 4700 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.
Damage Report. A woman reported that she found her rental car with an estimated $3,000 damage to its trunk and bumper upon retrieving it from the night before.

Give them a brake
9:21 a.m. — 3800 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.
Traffic Complaint. A resident flagged down police to report that a large group of bicyclists was riding in the south-bound traffic lane and impeding traffic. He said that a verbal altercation ensued after he blew his horn at them. The 12 riders told police that the resident had started the altercation by blowing his horn at them, pulling in front of them and braking, causing the riders to brake to avoid crashing. Both parties were given information about laws pertaining to bike lanes.

Security blanket
3:33 p.m. — 200 block of Sands Point Road
. Found Property. A security guard called police to remove a handgun from under a mattress after a guest asked the guard to check on whether he had left his gun in the room.

 

Gas leak
2:39 p.m. — 5600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive. Gas Leak. Police responded to a gas leak. Longboat Key Fire Rescue was on scene and was able to shut the gas off at the source.

Case closed
5:20 p.m. — 500 block of Russell Street.
Suspicious person. A 26-year-old man told police he was visiting a friend after police received a report of a suspicious young man standing in a driveway who appeared to be drunk. Police found the passenger door of a vehicle at the residence open, but the residence was secure. The man told police he had not seen anything suspicious and did not notice the vehicle door open.


Classic Cops
July 28, 1999

12:05 p.m. 500 block Bay Isles Parkway.
Disturbance. Customer upset with gas-station attendant because he thought the attendant raised the price of gas while he was pumping. Customer didn’t know he had pulled into full-service lane.
