Aug. 24
Second time around
9:52 p.m.
— 6000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive (GMD). Security Check. Police found an unsecured door at a local marina, and an employee arrived to secure the office building. The door needed to be secured again three days later.

Just talking
10:16 p.m.
— 4600 block of GMD. Suspicious Vehicle. A security guard told police that a couple pulled into a resort parking lot and stayed there. They were politely asked to leave after telling the guard they just pulled over to talk.

Aug. 25
Home help
2:52 p.m.
— 600 block of Spanish Drive North. Alarm. Police responded to a 911 hang-up call and discovered the front door of the home where the call originated was unlocked. The phone appeared to be disconnected, and the home was secured.

Father knows best
11:22 a.m.
— 2500 block of GMD. Welfare Check. Police were asked to check on the welfare of a son’s father. Police found the father lucid and deep in conversation with a home-health aide. The father said his son has mental-health problems and constantly harasses him.

Aug. 27
Open-and-shut case
9:57 a.m.
— 500 block of Bay Isles Road. Public Service. The postmaster called police to report a potential case of vandalism. The owner of the post office box told police no crime had occurred and that the glass fell out of the door when he opened it.

Gas leak closes park
2:47 p.m.
— 200 block of GMD. Gas Leak. The Fire Rescue Department reported a gas leak in Overlook Park. Police closed the park until the leak was repaired.

Aug. 28
Sunken sailboat
9:47 a.m.
— Off the Key. Boat. Police saw a mast from a small sunken sailboat sticking out of Sarasota Bay. The boat, which sunk from heavy rainfall, was considered a navigational hazard. Plans were made to remove it.

No dogs allowed
10:20 a.m.
— Beer Can Island. Code Enforcement. Police told a man walking his dog on Beer Can Island that signs were posted prohibiting dogs on the island. He was issued a written warning for the violation.

Pool furniture stolen
10:38 a.m.
— 300 block of North Shore Road. Larceny. A couple reported that someone stole two umbrella bases and two clay potted plants valued at $300 from their pool deck while they were out of town.

Need for 10-speed
1:01 p.m.
— 5700 block of GMD. Larceny. A man called to report that someone stole his $300 10-speed bicycle from an unlocked storage room on the ground floor of his condominium complex.

Stolen flag
1:46 p.m.
— 1600 block of GMD. Larceny. Someone stole the American flag that was flying at half-mast in front of The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort property.

Aug. 29
Paws off
10:06 a.m.
— Beer Can Island. Code Enforcement. Police told a man that a legal place to allow his dog to run loose was the sandbar in Sarasota Bay near Jewfish Key.

Rescue help
12:38 p.m.
— Off the Key. Assist Other Agency. Police assisted the city of Sarasota Police Department with a distress call that reported a boat was taking on water. The six occupants of the boat, who were in the water upon arrival, were rescued.

Access denied
1:23 p.m.
— 1600 block of GMD. Trespassing. Police told a woman that she could no longer park her car at the closed Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. The woman was attempting to access the beach from the closed property.

Aug. 30
Scrap it
7:32 a.m.
— Intersection of Broadway and Longboat Drive South. Suspicious Vehicle. Police observed a silver truck driving through a neighborhood. The driver told police he was picking up scrap metal from homeowners who gave him permission to pick it up.
