Commission postpones telecommunications decision

The Longboat Key Town Commission will review a telecommunications study report and guide staff on how to proceed with its telecommunications code.

The Longboat Key Town Commission isn’t ready to make changes to its telecommunications code yet, but changes will be made soon.

At its regular workshop Monday, commissioners directed Town Manager Dave Bullock and staff to make changes to a hierarchy chart presented to commissioners that will give future applicants wanting to build cellular towers or other telecommunication equipment a path to follow when trying to obtain a permit.

The town attorney’s office has recommended the commission consider amending its zoning code to allow for cellular towers that are taller than 30-feet and to establish a reasonable maximum height for the towers. Without making the changes to its code, the town could legally be viewed as prohibiting towers on the island.

Also at the workshop, commissioners discussed and moved forward to a regular meeting:

• A resolution that updates the town’s 10-year water supply plan for the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

• A proposed 2013 commission meeting schedule.

• A budget transfer of $40,000 for the completion of a replacement Linley Street boat ramp in Longbeach Village.
