The Longboat Key Town Commission moved forward unanimously with the 1.8872 millage rate and the budget recommended by Town Manager Bruce St. Denis for the 2011-12 fiscal year. The rate for the upcoming year is unchanged from the fiscal year of 2010-11. One mill is equal to $1 for every $1,000 of assessed valuation.

The commission will approve the budget on second reading at a special meeting beginning at 5:01 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Longboat Key Town Hall.

Also at the Sept. 12 regular meeting, the commission:

Forwarded to its Sept. 26 meeting for second reading and public hearing:
• An ordinance that would modify town codes to comply with changes to Florida State Statutes regarding regulation of firearms and weapons.

• An amended ordinance reconfiguring boat mooring areas at the Lighthouse Pont community docks as requested by the Lighthouse Point Association. The ordinance reduced the eight boat slips requested by the association to seven.

Adopted:
• An ordinance amending the zoning code to allow the Longboat Key Zoning Board of Adjustments to make determinations of the board’s jurisdiction to consider requests for variances from zoning code.

Passed a special-exception order:
• Providing for a six-month extension of an expiration date for the construction of a common dock by the Jewfish Key Preservation Association.

Heard from:
• Resident Gene Jaleski, who expressed concerns about sand loss on the north end.
• Commissioner Jack Duncan, who updated the commission on the Vision Subcommittee’s progress.

Presented:
• A certificate of completion of the Institute of Elected Municipal Officials to Commissioner Jack Duncan.
