Technically, Longboat Key Town Manager David Bullock’s contract with the town ends Sept. 15, but commissioners have made it clear they don’t want him going anywhere.

The commission will discuss a more permanent agreement with Bullock during its 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21 regular workshop. During its May 7 regular meeting, the commission directed Town Attorney David Persson to begin discussing a contract that would provide for a longer tenure.

Persson wrote in a June 13 letter to commissioners that Bullock has suggested a three-year contract with two one-year renewals — an agreement similar to the current contract, which allows the commission the options to renew or not renew. The contract would increase Bullock’s severance pay to 20 weeks’ salary — the maximum allowed under a state law passed last year that limits severance for public employees — from its current amount of 30 days’ pay if terminated without cause.

Persson wrote that he has gotten other suggestions from his individual discussions with commissioners , including a three-year contract with a three-year renewal and a provision allowing the town manager a cost-of-living increase if other town employees receive a cost-of-living increase.

Bullock told the commission at its May 7 meeting that he would not accept a pay increase, even if offered. His current contract includes a $180,000 salary, $540,000 term life-insurance policy and retirement contribution equivalent to 17.8% of his salary.

Bullock became town manager Nov. 1, after 14 years as Sarasota County deputy administrator. He took on the position held by Bruce St. Denis for more than 14 years.
