The Longboat Key Town Commission voted unanimously on second reading to approve two amendments at today’s special commission meeting.

The amendments relate to both Bayfront Park Recreation Center and the changes approved by the commission in May 2010 regarding the Longboat Key Club and Resort’s Islandside renovation-and-expansion project.

The latter drew public comment from those both in favor and opposed to the change.

Three Islandside condominium owners spoke against the amendment, arguing that changes were being made to accommodate a private enterprise.

But several residents and business owners argued that the changes were necessary and would benefit the future of the island.

Also at today’s special meeting, the commission:

• Approved an ordinance that reflects the reorganization of the town’s Finance Department because of the retirement of the purchasing manager.
• Forwarded to its Sept. 12 regular meeting for second reading and public hearing: An ordinance that would modify town codes to comply with changes to Florida State Statutes regarding regulation of firearms and weapons.
• Discussed agenda items for a future joint meeting between Longboat Key and Sarasota County commissioners.
• Approved authorization allowing the town to seek additional flexibility in the Sarasota County Tourist Development Council Agreement.
