These Longboat Key, Lido and Bird Key high school seniors have aced countless exams, read stacks of literary classics, won football games and tennis matches, danced at prom, learned to drive, learned foreign languages, mastered the FCAT and took their high schools by storm. Now these students are ready to set sail and take on the world of higher education. Class of 2012, we commend you! Here’s a look at all they have accomplished.
















Harrison Lempriere
High school attended: Out-of-Door Academy
Parents: Grant and Michelle Lempriere
College plans: Loyola University, New Orleans (Honors College)
Summer plans: To find a summer job.
Favorite high school class: AP calculus AB
Favorite high school memory: Winning the district championship in soccer and beating St. Stephen’s.
Hobbies: Soccer, football and weightlifting
Awards or honors: National Honor Society, Heads List

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“Working, maybe as an actuary, in a large city, e.g., New York or Los Angeles.”

What’s something you can’t live without?
“My computer.”

What’s the most important lesson you learned in high school?
“I think the most important lesson I learned in high school was how to take notes and how to study.”

Who is your greatest role model?
“I do not have a greatest role model, (I’m) self-driven.”

















Landon Garrison Maxey
High school attended: Out-of-Door Academy
Parents: Tonya Garrison and Mike Maxey
College plans: Furman University, in Greenville, S.C.
Summer plans: “I recently completed an internship at G.WIZ Science Museum and plan to either volunteer or work a part-time job for the summer. I also will attend summer orientation at Furman as well as a family reunion to celebrate my great-grandparents’ 70th wedding anniversary.”
Favorite high school memory: “One of my favorite experiences during high school was our class trip to the Everglades.”
Hobbies: “I enjoy reading, building computers, spending time in the Fab Lab at G.WIZ and experimenting with Steampunk creations utilizing vacuum tubes, Edison bulbs, etc.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“I see myself working on or having received my Ph.D. in engineering and employed with a company for which I can apply what I’ve learned to bring about improvements for our world.”

















John McGinn
High school attended: Riverview High School
Parents: Lisa and Brian McGinn
College plans: Florida Atlantic University, in Fort Lauderdale, to study ocean engineering
Summer plans: “I work at The Old Salty Dog Restaurant. I also will be attending Bonnaroo and boating and fishing as much as possible.”
Favorite high school class: “AP art design was my favorite high school class.”
Favorite high school memory: “My favorite high school memory was the trip to Epcot at Disney World freshman year.”
Hobbies: “I longboard, fish, wakeboard, build custom fishing rods, surf and scuba dive.”
Extracurricular activities and community service: “I play lacrosse; run cross-country; and volunteer at Mote Marine and Habitat for Humanity.”

What’s the most important lesson you learned in high school?
“In high school, I learned that hard work pays off. If you study and focus, the reward is great.”

















Jason Ribero
High school attended: Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School
Parents: Celeste and Tom Parks
College plans: Attending the University of South Florida, in Tampa, to receive an undergraduate degree in finance
Summer plans: Working at the Longboat Key Club as a camp counselor, instructing kids to play tennis and a family vacation to Spain.
Favorite high school class: Physics and economics
Hobbies: Tennis and golf
Extracurricular activities and community service: Volunteer at Mote Marine for four years, volunteer with Community Youth Development with Sarasota County and active in Sarasota County Political Board and Teen Board
Awards or honors: Graduated with honors, selected for George Mason Law Forum, selected for STAR Leadership with the Sarasota Community Youth Development and member of National Society of High School Honors
Favorite high-school memory: “When we all signed each other’s shirts on the last day of high school.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Joining an investment banking firm after receiving my J.D./MBA

What’s something you can’t live without?
My parents.

What’s the most important lesson you learned in high school?
“You can accomplish anything when you apply yourself.”

Who is your greatest role model?
“Mr. Cacciatore, an attorney I have known since I was 5 years old. He has influenced my career and life choices.”

College plans: Attending IMG for a year (lacrosse)
Summer plans: Work and play lacrosse for Tampa Bay Fire
Favorite high school class: College algebra
Favorite high school memory: “Winning the lacrosse district title for my friend, Joey Powers, who passed away.”
Hobbies: Socializing with friends.
Extracurricular activities and community service: Key Club
Awards or honors: MVP of lacrosse, captain senior year, first team all-district 2012

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“(As) a civil engineer.”

What’s something you can’t live without?
“My phone.”

What’s the most important lesson you learned in high school?
“Have the right goals and the right set of priorities.”

Who is your greatest role model?
“My parents.”

Hobbies: Fishing, recreational football and basketball

Stephanie Walters
High school attended: Pine View School
Parents: Gail and Joel Walters
College plans: University of Florida Honors Program
Summer plans: “I will be working as a camp counselor at Camp Barney Medintz, in Cleveland, Ga.”
Favorite high school memory: Attending and performing at the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama with the Pine View Chorale
Extracurricular activities and community service: Booker High School varsity swim team, Booker High School varsity track team and volunteered as a teen assistant at Florida Studio Theatre
Awards or honors: AP Scholar Award from College Board AP Program, profiled on Educational Channel show “Game On/ Profiles” as student athlete on Booker High School varsity swim team, performed in National Festival Chorus at Carnegie Hall, in New York, with Pine View Chorale and attended FHSAA State Swim Meet 2A twice

Hannah Bergan Kates graduated May 5 from Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s of science in environmental engineering. She was on the dean’s list all four years, president of Engineers Without Borders student chapter and traveled to Cameroon and Nicaragua for community development projects. She served on the President’s Council Governing Board and was engaged in several sustainability activism groups and leadership organizations on campus. She graduated from Sarasota High in 2008 and is the daughter of Lisa Kates and Richard LaBrie, of Lido Shores, and the granddaughter of Catherine and Richard LaBrie and the late Beatrice Kates.
















Ginny Mazza graduated May 12 from Stetson University with a master’s of education in reading education. Mazza was admitted into the Kappa Delta Pi International Educational Honor Society. She will teach fourth grade at Turie T. Small in Daytona. She is the daughter of Longboat Key residents Joe and Mary Mazza.

Jeffrey Shapiro graduated May 12 from Stetson University with a bachelor’s of arts in psychology. Shapiro was born at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and lived on Longboat Key his entire life. His parents are Janet and Bob Shapiro.
