City hosts Public Works Open House

The city of Sarasota is inviting its residents to a Public Works Department Open House 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22 to get a behind the scenes look at how the department works. The session will be held at the Public Works Department, 1750 12th St., Sarasota.

Many exhibits will be set up including demonstrations of how water and effluent systems function. A high-tech camera, which is used in the sewer system via closed circuit television, will be on display. Heavy machinery also will be on demonstration, including a street sweeper and a solid waste collection truck. Plus, representatives from the city’s landscape, streets and highways, engineering and sustainability divisions will have displays set up and will be available to answer citizens’ question.

The open house is a result of the Citizens’ Academy, which gives city residents and business owners an in-depth look at how their municipal government operates

The Citizens’ Academy is an eight-week course offered by the city of Sarasota, which provides in-depth learning about municipal government. Other departments highlighted in the program include: Bobby Jones Golf Club, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Sarasota Police Department and Neighborhood and Development Services.
