With the Fourth of July a few days away, the Sarsota Observer hears what children at the Evalyn Sadlier Jones YMCA’s Selby Aquatic Center have planned for the holiday and what it means to them.

Christian Leetzow, 8
What are you going to do to celebrate July Fourth? We’re going to Siesta Key beach and watching the fireworks!

What does Independence Day mean to you? Celebrating America’s birthday.

Do you know who George Washington was? He was the first president.

Abbi Halvorson, 10
What does Independence Day mean to you? I don’t know. Is it the day America became independent? From George Washington?

What are you going to do July Fourth? Cook out and watch fireworks with my family.

What’s something you like about America? We get to be independent.

Jayden Raymond, 8
What does Independence Day mean to you? Celebrating when we won the war.

What are you going to do to celebrate? Probably sit outside and watch fireworks at my house or a friend’s.

Do you have a favorite type of firework? Yes, the small ones, because they start small but blow up big.

Chloe Parris, 10
What does Independence Day mean to you? Well, it means a lot to me, because my grandma, Marjorie Hafmeister Davis, was a dental assistant and German interpreter in World War II.

What are you going to do to celebrate? We’re probably going to get the family together and go to the beach; we do that for every family holiday.

What’s your favorite July Fourth food? I really like when my grandparents make deviled eggs.
