Census shows drop in Longboat Key population

During the past decade, Longboat Key has experienced a 9.4% drop in population, according to 2010 U.S. Census data that was released today.

The total population of Longboat Key on April 1, 2010 was 6,888, according to the data, or 715 fewer people than the 7,603 counted in the 2000 Census. Just 199 of Longboat Key’s residents, or 2.9% of its population, were under 18 at that time.

The racial makeup of Longboat Key broke down as follows: 98.4% white; 0.2% black or African-American; and 0.1% American Indian or Alaska native. Another 0.1% of respondents listed “some other race,” while 0.4% listed “two or more races.” Of respondents, 1.1% listed themselves as Hispanic or Latino.

According to the data, Longboat Key had 8,814 total housing units last April. Occupied housing units accounted for 3,883, or 44.1% of those units, and vacant housing units totaled 4,931, or 55.9% of units.
