Deployed Jewish soldiers will enjoy a brighter Passover holiday, thanks to the creativity and care of East County students attending the Temple Emanu-El Religious School.

Under the leadership of Temple Emanu-El’s director of religious education and East County resident Sabrina Silverberg, East County children were among dozens of religious-school students who spent the morning Jan. 27 making Passover cards for Jewish soldiers who will be serving overseas during the holiday season.

After learning about the Jewish values of aravim ze ba’ze, which means taking responsibility for one another, and gemilut chasadim — performing acts of loving kindness — children used construction paper, markers, stickers, foam art pieces and Hebrew stencils for their handmade creations. The cards were mailed early this month to ensure delivery by March 25, the first night of Passover.
