SARASOTA
The scent of hairspray and pre-pageant jitters come to the stage at Sarasota Players Theatre in “Smile, The Beauty Pageant Musical,” a play about a 1980s beauty pageant set in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Krista Hunsicker, a junior at Lakewood Ranch High School, stars as Shawn Christianson, a fierce, competitive contestant anxious to get the crown.

“When I’m not at rehearsal, I’m singing songs from the show because they are stuck in my head,” Krista says.
Being in the show has also offered some new experiences.

“Walking and dancing in heels is a challenge,” she says.

This headlining musical of the season is a satire that examines the true personalities of both the contestants and those who run the pageant and reveals their true personalities under the big hair and blue eye shadow. In addition to Krista, the play features several other East County residents, including Jillian Smith (Braden River Middle), Victoria Najmy (Haile Middle), Kristina Greco (Haile Middle), Channing Weir (Manatee School for the Arts) and adult Kat Walton of Lakewood Ranch. The Players will perform “Smile, The Beauty Pageant Musical” at 8 p.m., April 23-25, and 2 p.m., April 25 and 26, at the theater, 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets are $23 for adults and $12 for students. For more information, call the box office at 365-2494.
