The U.S. Congress voted Thursday to raise the national debt limit to $134.3 trillion — a $1.9 trillion increase.
H.J. Res. 45 raises the national debt limit from its current $12.4 trillion to $14.3 trillion. The measure passed 244 to 187.
East County’s representative Congressman Vern Buchanan voted against the measure, again lobbying for more fiscal responsibility and his commitment to advocating for a constitutional balanced budget amendment.
“Enough is enough,” Buchanan said. “We need to stop borrowing and spending more than we take in. I am concerned about its impact on the economy and the debt we are leaving our children and grandchildren.”
In fiscal year 2009, the federal government left a $1.42 trillion deficit.
