+ Beach assessment planned for Friday
Officials from FEMA will walk some of Sarasota’s shoreline Friday morning to assess damage from Tropical Storm Isaac.

Federal officials from the agency will meet with Commissioner Paul Caragiulo, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan and other local officials.

“This is one of the few chances we have to recover some sort of funds for shoreline protection,” Caragiulo said at the Tuesday Sept. 4 City Commission meeting.

+ Community Center celebrates first year
The Robert L. Taylor Community Center is celebrating its one-year anniversary. The center opened in North Sarasota Sept. 2, 2011, and has become a popular place, known for its equipment and youth programs.

Mayor Suzanne Atwell works out at the community center’s gym and said she has been able to see many of the programs offered for area youth.

“Just watching what is happening while I’m there on the treadmill is wonderful,” Atwell said.

+ Brown bucks county requests
Siesta Key business owner Chris Brown declined two of four document requests made by Sarasota Assistant County Attorney David Pearce in the civil lawsuit Brown filed last year against the county.

Pearce, in a July request for production, asked Brown’s counsel for any correspondence between Brown and Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar co-owner Troy Syprett, and Brown and members of the Siesta Key Association from the previous five years.

Brown’s legal counsel, Aug. 28, said there was no correspondence and declined to supply justification and the methodology used to determine the damages Brown has requested.

Sarasota County commissioners voted to decline a $277,000 settlement Brown requested last month, with county attorney Stephen DeMarsh noting it was imprudent to settle unless more is known about how Brown arrived at the figure.
