+ Magnets for File of Life now available
Longboat Key Fire Rescue firefighter/paramedic David Kyle has announced that 10,000 File of Life magnets are in the hands of the fire department and will be distributed to residents.

The magnets, which are meant for refrigerator doors, are used by firefighter/paramedics when they are looking for critical information about a patient, including allergies, past medical history and a list of medications a patient is taking.

For your homeowner or condominium association to receive your magnets, send an e-mail to Kyle at [email protected].

+ Trash the habit: Clean up the beach
Rusty Chinnis, Key resident and owner of Longboat Key-based Rusty Chinnis Contractor Inc., wrote a letter to the Town Commission Thursday, Nov. 5, urging the town to fund the installation of bins for cigarette butts at all of the island’s beach-access points.

“I walk the beach often from the Broadway beach access and find lots of discarded (cigarette) butts on the beach,” Chinnis wrote.

Chinnis sent the town information about a Keep Manatee Beautiful project instituted on Anna Maria Island, which placed cigarette-butt bins on posts near public beach-access points.

Once the city of Anna Maria created ash receptacles, for instance, the beach near Bayfront Park went from having 3,431 butts on the ground in August to having just 438 butts on the ground in September.

Commissioner Gene Jaleski supported Chinnis’ e-mail and said he will ask Town Manager Bruce St. Denis to place the item on a future regular workshop agenda.
