+ Islandside project
hearings reconvene

The Planning and Zoning Board will reconvene its Longboat Key Club and Resort Islandside renovation and expansion public hearing request at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles Road.

The Town Commission, meanwhile, waived a town requirement that the seven-member board review the second of two public hearings for the outline development application after 5 p.m.

After six project meetings of eight hours each for the Planning and Zoning Board, the commission determined a night meeting isn’t practical for this hearing.

The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. sometime in January.

+ Rothenberg can vote on term limits
Town Attorney David Persson ruled that Mayor Lee Rothenberg can vote on a resolution at the commission’s Monday, Dec. 7 regular meeting that would allow him to serve an additional two-year term.
Commissioners had expressed concern last month at their workshop and wondered if the mayor should be prohibited from voting on a resolution amending the commission’s interpretation of term limits.

Florida statutes, town code and case law, Persson said, were used for his decision that the mayor does not have to abstain from voting next week.

+ Toys for Tots
donations needed

The Longboat Key Police Department, 5460 Gulf of Mexico Drive, has been selected as a toy drop-box location for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program.

The campaign collects toys for needy and disadvantaged children during the holiday season.
Key residents can drop off an unwrapped new toy at the Longboat Key Police Department front desk.

From a Nov. 26 article, Cedars West of Longboat Inc. will pay for repairs of the two disputed tennis courts at Cedars Tennis Resort & Fitness Club. Repairs will take place from Dec. 12 through Dec. 19.
