+ School district hosts public meeting
Manatee County Public School officials are hoping to get parents more involved in the legislative process.

The School District will host a town-hall meeting on the basics of the legislative process 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Braden River High School, 6545 State Road 70 E., Bradenton. The event’s opening speaker will be All-Star football legend Henry Lawrence.

The evening will be designed for parents and students to learn how they can make a difference, as the Legislature prepares to meet on issues that will affect the county. For information, contact Tina Lundy at 708-8800, Ext. 1074.

+ Organizations launch Haiti support
Publix Super Markets and the Manatee County Public School District are both launching donation campaigns to provide relief to residents of Haiti, who were recently impacted by a 7.0 earthquake.

Publix Super Markets has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross and also is implementing a donation campaign for its customers, who can donate when checking out.

Additionally, Manatee County Public Schools and the Manatee Education Association are implementing the “Hope for Haiti” program. The district-wide effort will allow district employees and students to make donations now through Feb. 1. They money will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Disaster Relief Fund.
