Approximately 12 break-ins occurred Sunday night in the Longbeach Village, most involving cash stolen from unlocked vehicles.

Acting Police Chief Pete Cumming said that none of the break-ins involved forced entry and could have been committed by a juvenile.

The Village has experienced flooding as the result of Tropical Storm Debby, which increases the opportunity for similar crimes, according to Cumming.

“When the standing water gets to a point where ordinary vehicles can’t access neighborhoods and you have people walking in and blocked into homes, it increases the opportunity.”

Police patrol flooded areas by foot and through other vehicles, including Public Works sport-utility vehicles.
Cumming encourages residents to lock both their home and car doors.
