Georgia Court is the kind of woman with whom you want to pull up a chair and discuss your latest read over a cup of coffee.

Court moved to Sarasota three years ago from Cincinnati, Ohio. Although she’s operated a public relations firm and published a healthcare newspaper, this will be the first time she’s owned a bookstore.

“I live in the heart of the theater district with the opera, wonderful galleries, the symphony and the arts,” Court said. “There’s all this culture, but there didn’t seem to be a literary spot for people really interested in the literary world.”

Bookstore 1 will carry a general selection of books but will have a strong emphasis on the fine and performing arts. One section will be dedicated to writer’s tools.

“It will be a very event- and community-centered space made available for writer’s groups, book groups, community groups, book signings and author appearances,” Court said. “The intent is for it to be an active place for people who love reading and writing.”

The shop is set to open March 1, at 1359 Main St.
