B.J. Bishop is once again chair of the Planning and Zoning Board.

Bishop has served on the board since 2006, including a tenure as chair from 2008 through 2013. She was appointed by board members at the group’s meeting last week. Also at the meeting, Kenneth Schneier was chosen for the role of vice chair and Stephen Madva was selected to be secretary.

The role changes are because of former chair Jim Brown’s departure from the board. On March 14, Brown was elected to serve on the Town Commission. As an elected official, Brown is no longer eligible to serve on the Planning and Zoning Board.

Bishop said the current board is a “dynamic group” that has the ability to accomplish a great deal for the Key. She specified two projects she hopes to see completed during her time as chair.

“I am determined that we are going to finish the comprehensive plan and update the zoning ordinance to a user-friendly document that benefits everyone on the island,” Bishop said.

A public hearing and first reading of  ordinances concerning amendments to both the comprehensive plan and zoning code are planned at the Town Commission meeting on Monday,

Because of Brown’s departure, there is a vacancy on the Planning and Zoning Board. Applications are being accepted by the town for the position, and the Town Commission is tentatively scheduled to choose a new board member on May 1.

Bishop noted that the board’s five current members are all residents of Sarasota County, with no member living in Manatee County.

“I raise this issue because I think it’s important for all parts of the island to be represented,” Bishop said.
