This black swan, Rosie, was brought to Save Our Seabirds last Saturday, not because of a broken wing, but because of a broken heart. When Rosie’s mate, Sammy, was removed July 30 from their pond home in Wimauma so that SOS staff could cure a bacterial infection on his foot, known as bumble foot, both birds became noticeably upset about the separation.

The solution: Reunite them at SOS while Sammy recovers from his Aug. 3 surgery. The swans, which mate for life, are much happier now that they are together again, SOS staff reports. Rosie and Sammy — after he recovers — can be visited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at SOS, 1708 Ken Thompson Parkway. Admission is free.
