Bicyclist transported to hospital after being struck by SCAT bus

A Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) bus struck a bicyclist crossing the intersection of Stickney Point Road and Gateway Avenue Monday, Feb. 25, sending the bicyclist to the hospital.

The bus was headed northbound on Gateway Avenue at 12:50 p.m. when the bus driver stopped for the red light at the intersection, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The bicyclist, Michael P. Kelly, 51, of Sarasota, was westbound on the sidewalk on the south shoulder of Stickney Point Road approaching the intersection with Gateway Ave. In an attempt to travel eastbound on Stickney Point Road, the SCAT bus driver proceeded forward as the bicyclist was crossing in the crosswalk causing the front of the bus to strike the Bicyclist.

Kelly was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The driver of the bus was issued a citation for violation of right of way, according to the FHP report.
