Two men sustained injuries in separate incidents Saturday on Longboat Key and were transported by Bayflite helicopters to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

In the first incident, a man who appeared to be in his mid-40s was riding a bicycle and was struck by a car after he began to cross Gulf of Mexico Drive from Bay Isles Road, according to Longboat Key interim Fire Chief Paul Dezzi. The man struck his face and was unconscious when firefighter/paramedics arrived on scene, although he regained consciousness by the time the helicopter arrived.

The second incident occurred at Inn on the Beach, when a 23-year-old male worker from Bradenton fell more than 20 feet and struck his head. The man was awake but confused when the helicopter arrived.

No immediate information was available about either man’s condition.

“A positive sign is that they were conscious on arrival, but because it’s a head injury, our protocol would be, by paramedics’ discretion, to call the helicopter,” Dezzi said.
