City commissioners are expected to approve today the issuance of up to $9.5 million in bonds to help pay for the construction of a Baltimore Orioles spring-training baseball stadium.

The city and county reached a deal with the Orioles over the summer to pay for a $31.2 million stadium complex on the site of the current Ed Smith Stadium.

What is still uncertain is how much the city will have to pay for the environmental cleanup of the Ed Smith property. A consultant’s report shows the presence of vinyl chloride.

Under the terms of the agreement with the Orioles, the city is responsible for all environmental cleanup costs.
Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown said those costs could be between $150,000 and $300,000, but there is a possibility it could be more.
