Cardinal Mooney High sophomore Reagan Griffith scored eight goals and notched two assists to lead the boys lacrosse team to a 20-5 victory over St. Stephen’s in district action March 11.

The Cougars attackman followed up his performance with four goals and an assist in the Cougars’ 18-7 district victory over rival The Out-of-Door Academy March 15.

Griffith, who has been playing lacrosse for the past seven years, has 37 goals and six assists on the season and has helped lead Cardinal Mooney to a 5-2 (3-0) record.

I liked lacrosse from day one. It was something new and different. I never played a sport like it before. That first season was kind of hard, but after that it started to come more naturally to me and I practiced a lot during the offseason.

It may not seem like it, but it’s not just me doing everything. It’s the team passing the ball around and having good ball movement. I’m just finishing it off. I’m just there for looks.

Right now my main goal is to try and get colleges to look at me. I’ve always wanted to play for Syracuse. I’ve just always liked the school. It’s a good school.

Starting as a freshman in high school has been my fondest moment so far. We had a lot of good competition on the team, and it felt good to be the best.

I started out at midfield before my coach decided to switch me to attack. I (definitely) like attack though, because I’m better at offense than defense. The hardest part about lacrosse is when you’re playing a really good team and they try to shut down a specific player. That’s happened to me a couple of times this season. It’s frustrating, but I just try to get the ball to my teammates and get them to score.

Over the summer, I play West Florida Lacrosse. The competition is a lot more difficult because we travel to different states. It’s given me a lot of good looks at other kids and their playing styles up North.
